Carbon black is a filler material used in rubber formulations which is produced by an incomplete combustion reaction of a feedstock material like coal tar. This high surface area to volume material is utilized in rubber products where tensile and abrasion resistance are important for performance needs. The highest volume use of carbon black is as a reinforcing material in tires. It also has found use in other non-tire rubber applications (belts, hoses, seals, etc.) as well as inks, coatings, plastics, and lithium-ion batteries.
